Forces of nature

This picture shows the top surface of one of the weather-beaten wooden posts that enclose the dunes. The forces of wind, sun and salt have bleached and sandpapered the pole over the years. Sand has filled the first fine fissures and rubbed away the softer tissue, so that fissures turned into wider cracks. The entire post will surely split somewhen. Notice the tiny beetle down to the right.
